Woman of confidence

Rani Mukerji opens up about her focus on giving the audience what they want, and taking up roles that are path-breaking

Rani Mukerji started her journey in films 27 years ago, and knows all about keeping the audience hooked. She has played a mother at a young age, a college student, and a 60-year-old woman, all equally convincingly. In an interaction with the media at the 54th IFFI 2023 being held in Goa, the actress talked about ageism, portraying strong Indian woman characters, maintaining herself and taking on roles ahead of times the times.

Staying relevant

My audience has loved me and accepted the way I portray myself on screen. They have helped me to break the barrier in age.

Accepting the reality of aging

Don’t expect eternal youth, but stay young at heart. Audiences should accept you in the age-group of the character you portray. I consciously give my audience what they want; playing a college student at 40 requires a logical reason, reflecting those who dreamt of college.

Actors needing to maintain their looks

When I played 60-year-old Hichki, the challenge was to look older. But when we try to look younger, we actors are ridiculed. It’s important to accept that you’re aging, and look after yourself. My focus is on how to look the same as I did 20 years ago. For this, I maintain a healthy lifestyle. When audiences pay to watch me, they don’t want to see a tired face.

Having confidence

Confidence emerges as I embody a character. In Hum Tum, Adi and director Kunal expected rejection, especially for the unconventional last scene. Despite a conservative background, I surprised them with a ‘Yes’. Appearing conservative, I aim to depict strength. Advocating for resilient portrayals, I shape perceptions through characters.

Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna

Discussing women’s needs is crucial; a good husband acknowledes a woman’s desires. In marriage, men prioritize financial stability, but women’s physical chemistry is often overlooked. Unlike men, women are seldom asked about attraction. Maya’s character loved Rishi differently, seeking Shahrukh’s character’s love. Despite discomfort, Karan Johar’s bold film Kabhi Alvida na Kehna addresses uncomfortable realities, challenging cultural norms and encouraging happiness over conformity. In India’s progressive cinema, it remains memorable.
