IIFA's starry night: Ranveer, Deepika bags best actor and actress award

With super-charged performances by the who's who of Bollywood, the IIFA awards night at Madrid was a splendid show.

Madrid seems to be ‘Indianised’ overnight. The Spanish capital city which hosted the IIFA 2016 was like a huge Bollywood set, with biggies from the industry attending the awards event and spreading excitement with some power-packed performances by stars like Hrithik Roshan, Tiger Shroff, Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Sonakshi Sinha and Salman Khan.

Green Carpet
The ever-flamboyant Ran-veer Singh spent most of his time on the green carpet, enthralling the media with his antics and indulging in conversation with all those who arrived at the same time as him. He spent some time with his Lootera co-star Sonakshi and her mother Poonam.

Ranveer, who is known for his eccentric dressing and props, didn’t disappoint this time around, wearing sunglasses in the shape of a crown. He wished Arjun Kapoor on his birthday and went on to have fun time with Fawad Khan and Karan Johar. Salman Khan, embroiled in the rape comment controversy, skipped interacting with media persons.

The Hosts
The night was hosted by Shahid Kapoor and Farhan Akhtar. Even when the teleprompter failed a few times, the duo covered up the glitches by ad-libbing their parts. The two called themselves Pappy and Raju and despite a script that had tried-and-tested jokes, improvised their portions.

Performances
Hrithik was the first to perform — he danced to some of his hit tracks from Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, Kites and Bang Bang. Priyanka not only danced, but gave a surprise by rendering some of her songs.

On one occasion, she stepped off the stage to shake a leg with an excited Anil Kapoor to Dil Dhadakne Do’s hit tracks. Tiger’s performance was a tribute to Michael Jackson and Hrithik and the crowd seemed to enjoy all of it. Sonakshi’s performance was a tribute to Sridevi as she danced to some of her old numbers.

The night, however, belonged to Deepika Padukone, who bagged the best actress award for Piku. Before the award, she set the stage afire with ‘Malhaari’, spurring Ranveer to send flying kisses in her direction. Salman’s performance was the closing act of the show. He performed to Tadap Tadap from Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.
