If in Shujaat Saudaagar’s 'Rock On 2' by any chance Shraddha Kapoor plays the rock band’s undoing and nemesis then the new trailer gets it right bang-on.
In 'Rock On 2', Ms Kapoor seems to be the catalyst, in a good or bad way, we don’t know. She seems to instigate all the drama. And she also executes much of the drama. We are not allowed to forget her cruciality to the proceedings for even a second. Barring Farhan Akhtar, other 'Rock On' regulars Purab Kohli, Arjun Rampal, Prachi Desai and Shahana Goswami barely get a word in edgewise.
And the new recruit Shashank Arora is given even less footage. It is the other new entrant into the band who occupies centrestage. Shraddha Kapoor seems unsure of what to do with all the attention. Her singing is at best, commendable. Though nothing to write home about. In fact the whole trend of actresses singing their own songs must be examined more closely.
Are we getting carried away with the idea of these young bright actresses whopping it up in the recording studio?
In 'Rock On 2', Shraddha plays a singer again. She did it in 'Aashiqui 2' and it worked like a charm because she played a Lata Mangeshkar fan. In 'Rock On 2' Shraddha seems to be her own biggest fan.
And that could be a problem for the film which otherwise looks like a reiteration of the team spirit that the first film so effectively voiced in 2008. Ironically, the director Abhishek Kapoor broke up the band’s bonding and moved ahead leaving the coast clear for a new helmer Shujaat Saudaagar. He is fully in control of the band’s destiny. Now if only Shraddha can hold that note in place....
