The response has been overwhelming: Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan talks about the success of Pink.

Did you expect such a tremendous response to Pink?
We did not. The kind of responses and the effect it has had on many individuals, especially women, has been overwhelming! After a reasonable start, the footfalls for Pink increased. The word of mouth worked for the film. There was no deliberate and practised marketing done, but somewhere Shoojit had the confidence that when people see the film, they would react and spread the word. And that’s what happened!

Pink may be used to promote women’s rights and privileges. Your comments.
Some Ministers and eminent legal luminaries have seen it, and have given hope of changing certain laws governing women and their plight in filing FIRs. In the film, Deepak Sehgal clarified a few misgivings. I do hope that they are put into practice soon. What is under consideration is that a woman can file a complaint at any given time of day and night, irrespective of holidays or weekends.

Pink is one of those films that can change the way we think. Any of your other films in this category?
Every Indian film has one basic message to convey in three hours — the victory of good over evil and poetic justice. For me to differentiate one from the other would be a wasteful exercise.

Just days after the release of Pink, a young woman in Delhi was stalked and stabbed. Do you think the rising growth in crime against women can be curbed?
That was a most unfortunate incident. But I do believe that a conscious effort in the process of education, law, moral and social policing shall bring results. Parental upbringing at an early age and inculcating certain values among the young is a must. Sons have to be educated too and should have a non-discriminatory attitude towards women. The law favours women, although there have been cases where its misuse has led to action against innocent men as well. But hopefully, a balance shall prevail.
