Box office: Rangoon takes a disappointing start on opening day

As per reports, the film has merely collected 5-6 crores at the domestic box office on Friday.

Mumbai: Much was expected from Vishal Bhardwaj’s ‘Rangoon’, considering the critical and commercial success of his last film, ‘Haider’ and the interesting casting coup he managed by getting Kangana Ranaut, Shahid Kapoor and Saif Ali Khan on board the film.

However, the love story, set against the backdrop of World War II, took a low start at the box office on the opening day, Friday. As per reports, the film has merely collected Rs 5-6 crores at the domestic box office on Friday, which is low on all counts.

The low collections are also surprising considering the fact that Mahashivratri was celebrated across the country on Friday and more footfalls could have hence been recorded for the film.

The film needs to show significant growth on Saturday and Sunday to stand any chance of making profits or recovering its costs. But with reviews from the critics being mixed and its 'niche' target audience, ‘Rangoon’ has a tough battle on hand.
