Women voters came out in large numbers
New Delhi: With their faces covered, standing in long queues in the blistering heat, women voters made it a point to be counted more strongly than before in this Lok Sabha elections. Many women voted for the work done by the incumbent government with regard to matters such as the Ujjwala gas connections and Triple Talaq, which directly impacts their lives.
Data from Election Commission indicated that voting percentage of women was higher than that of previous elections. While the Election Commission is yet to give collated data for all seven phases, information from the first four phases indicates that the number of women voters was very close to men.
While the overall average turnout of men was 68.3 per cent in the first four phases, the percentage of women voters was reported to be 68 per cent.
This means the total number of women voters was 203.1 million while that of men was 215 million.
Interestingly, the number of voters was reported to be higher than men in 13 states and Union Territories.
In places such as Manipur, Kerala, Meghalaya, Tamil Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh, Odisha, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Goa, Daman and Diu, Mizoram and Lakshadweep too women voters outnumbered men.
In states such as Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat, though the number of men voters remained higher, women voters were not far behind.
