Sanjay Dutt moves to court to get his passport back
Mumbai: In what is likely to be his last application in the special ‘Terrorist and Disruptive Activities’ (Prevention) Act court, actor Sanjay Dutt has requested the judge to return his passport as he had completed his sentence in the 1993 serial bomb blasts case. He requested that his passport be handed to him as no case was pending against him any more.
When the actor’s application came up for hearing before special judge G.A. Sanap he asked CBI counsel Deepak Salvi what he had to say. Following this he told the court that the agency did not have any objection in returning Dutt’s passport. However, the court is likely to pass an order on actor’s plea on Tuesday.
According to CBI sources, the actor’s new passport is with the CBI and it would be returned to him as soon as the court passes an order.
Dutt was arrested on April 19, 1993, for possession and destruction of illegal firearms. This was part of cache of arms and explosives smuggled into India and was used in the 1993 serial blasts.
The actor had to spend around 18 months in jail before he was granted bail and. Later on July 31, 2007, the Tada court in Mumbai acquitted him of terror charges but sentenced him to six years of rigorous imprisonment under the Arms Act and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000.
In 2013, the Supreme Court upheld the ruling but reduced the sentence to five years following which he surrendered to serve the rest of his sentence and walked out of Pune’s Yerawada Jail on February 25 as a free man after completing his sentence.
