Exclusive: Kunal Kapoor accepts 'things went downhill' after Rang De Basanti success
Kunal Kapoor is set to make a comeback. After his first successful stint, Rang De Basanti, he has had to wait for a while, before a few short films set the ball rolling again.
“After the success of my first film, things went downhill. At one point, I had to figure out the kind of films I was keen on doing. Fortunately, my writing hobby, which mushroomed during my adolescence, came to my rescue,” he says adding, “I decided to write a few scripts of my personal liking. And a producer has backed one of my stories, about a father-son relationship. The story draws from my early childhood relationships. As of now, the script is incomplete, but hopefully the film will go on the floor next year”
Reminiscing about his childhood days, he says, “We were a small family of five, but also spent a lot of time with our extended family of about 25 uncles, aunts and cousins. We would spend both summers and winters in Delhi and Amritsar, as mom and dad came from these two cities. As the youngest kid, I would be doted on.”
The actor will be seen as Col. Shahanawaz in Raagdesh next. “I had to learn the Urdu and Punjabi dialect for it. I feel the younger generation needs to know the origins of the Indian National Army and how Britishers faced defeat while planning to degrade three soldiers.” About his future films, Kunal says, “I have just shot a little portion of Gold, a film about India bagging the first Olympic gold medal for hockey.”
“I am happy with these roles. I surely love this second innings in my acting career,” he concludes.
