Silence is not so golden

However, celebrities like Sania Mirza, Soundariya Rajinikanth and Disha Patani are being slammed by netizens for not addressing the attack.

The country is mourning after 40 CRPF personnel were martyred in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama attack on February 14. A virtual war seems to have started on social media, with some demanding fierce action against Pakistan, while others want to resort to a peaceful solution.

However, celebrities like Sania Mirza, Soundariya Rajinikanth and Disha Patani are being slammed by netizens for not addressing the attack and instead going on with their lives as if nothing happened. Actor Vicky Kaushal at a recent event said, “I am not knowledgeable enough to sit here (in Mumbai) and suggest what should be done. Every action has its own repercussions. I think it’s best to let out government think. Absolutely, it is necessary to give a befitting response that will make them realise that we do not take such things lightly but very seriously.”

While he was applauded by people for giving a practical answer, unfortunately, other celebrities didn’t get the similar treatment.

Recent example being ace tennis player Sania Mirza. Mirza, who is married to Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik, posted a long statement on social media on Sunday evening, lashing out at those who are criticising the celebrities for not making a public statement.

However, her note addressing the attacks did not mention Pakistan anywhere and this is what didn’t go down well with her followers.

While a follower commented, “Had u named Pakistan,it would have been great. U hv mentioned “there’s no place for terrorism”.but there exists a nation named Pakistan where terrorism is a religion... Chaliye koi baat Nahin.aur 2-4 line b likh lijiye dikhane ko (sic).”

Another tweeted addressed to Sania read, “Ma’am, u r right but in your letter u didn’t mention anything against Pakistan. We r not questioning ur patriotism but what about Pak. U wrote such a big letter but was there no space for 7 letters Pakistan (sic)”

Not just Sania, even producer Soundariya Rajinikanth, who is honeymooning in Iceland with Vishagan Vanangamudi faced the backlash for posting honeymoon pictures in times when the country is mourning the tragedy. Followers requested her to not post pictures for at least two days since it’s not an appropriate time. And the day after being trolled, she posted a picture paying respect to the soldiers! Actress Disha Patani, who is brand ambassador for a lingerie brand had posted a harmless picture, when the netizens trolled her for posting pictures in skimpy outfit and not addressing the big issue at hand.
