Although the makers of the new intriguing quasi-real love triangle Rangoon have vehemently denied any resemblance to real life events, Kangana Ranaut who plays a stunt actress of the 1940s bears some striking resemblance to Fearless Nadia, the first female superstar of Indian cinema. In fact when Rangoon was first announced seven years ago, it was called Julia and was clearly inspired by the stunt actress.
However now the film’s makers are in denial, probably in defiance of Fearless Nadia’s family, who became curious about the project when it was announced.
Says a source close to the film, “There were other stunt actresses in that era. The character that Kangana plays could be any of them.”
However, the Central Board of Film Certification is not buying the film’s fictional claim. It has asked for a disclaimer at the start of the film stating that Rangoon is not a work of a fiction. The disclaimer will now have to read that Rangoon is based on fiction and “living legends”.
A source from the CBFC explained, “They can justify Kangana’s character as being fictional because she is named Julia. But there are other names taken during the course of the film, of real-life film personalities. So how can they claim it to be a work of fiction?”
