It’s the performance that matters: Mrunal Thakur

Jersey star Mrunal Thakur says her love of cricket added that extra vibe

Mrunal Thakur moved from television to cinema with Super 30 opposite Hrithik Roshan. And that film landed her the Shahid Kapoor-starrer Jersey.

“I am happy that I realized that it is not the length of the role that matters, but how well you do a scene. Jersey director Gowtam Tinnanuri told me he wanted to cast me in his film after watching one scene of mine in Super 30,” says Mrunal, who is now a regular on OTT with releases like Toofan and Dhamaka.

“After I heard the Jersey story and watched the Telugu film, I wanted to do it. But I was not sure I could do it. I told the producer that I was having second thoughts as it did not seem easy. There is this one scene in the film where I slap Shahid Kapoor. I was quite apprehensive about that, because it was not a cheat shot. It was to be shot on the fourth or fifth day, but the producers cancelled it and allowed me three days to prepare,” says Mrunal.

Explaining the way she works, the actress says, “I do not aim at success, but focus on the journey. When I started my career, I wanted to experience what it meant to be an actor.

“I was pursuing journalism and I wanted to be a crime journalist. I could not get that in real life, but I got the opportunity to play that on screen, in Dhamaka, and that too with Ram Madhvani, my dream director. So I made sure that it worked. There is a song Kya khoya kya paaya in the film — I think I learned and earned a lot by doing Dhamaka,” says the actress.

After films like Super 30, Batla House, Love Sonia, Dhamaka and now Jersey, Mrunal is currently on the sets of Shahid’s brother Ishaan Khattar’s film Pippa in which she plays his sibling.
