The ON SONG ensemble!

More and more movie stars are turning playback singers and lending their vocals to popular tracks in films...

The world has been going crazy ever since Scarlett Johansson hummed The Moon Song for the movie Her. Jennifer Lawrence indulged in The Mockingjay, and Keira Knightley hit us hard with her tracks from Begin Again; but closer home, our B-town stars aren’t too far behind in flaunting their voices, setting records straight.

The craze began with Priyanka Chopra’s widely acclaimed album, In My City which blew up within the matter of days, and then arrived Shraddha Kapoor’s vocal surprise for her movie Ek Villain. Later, she also went on to sing for her movies ABCD 2 and Baaghi. Alia Bhatt amazed audiences, dropping her ever soothing track Samjhaawan Unplugged in the movie Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya and joining her in this IT-club was Sonakshi Sinha, who took it a notch higher by rapping for Ishqoholic. Parineeti Chopra, who has recently done playback for her latest movie Meri Pyaari Bindu, left us all mesmerised with her track Maana Ke Hum Yaar Nahin.

In a casual chat with Mahalakshmi Iyer, the singer is all praise for these crooning actors. “But that shouldn’t be the only prerequisite, merely to promote the movie. It’s a common phenomenon in the west and it’s brilliant if the star has had some prior training. If they can justify the emotion within the song, then it’s a welcome prospect.”

Our actors don’t lag behind when it comes to flaunting their vocals. Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Salman Khan and even Aamir Khan have participated in singing for the movies they have starred in. Probably inspired by Dhanush who gained extra fame with Why This Kolaveri Di and Vasundhara Das, known for the iconic party anthem, It’s the time to disco, actors are out to explore and fine tune their way to reigning the top charts.
