Hyderabad has always been special: Kumar Sanu

Hyderabadis are in for a musical treat this Friday as playback singer Kumar Sanu returns to the city after 3 years.

The king of romantic songs, who crooned Kuch Na Kaho from 1942: A Love Story and Bas Ek Sanam Chahiye from Aashiqui amongst 20,000 other songs — Kedarnath Bhattacharya, better known as Kumar Sanu, will be in town to perform on February 16.

In the city after a gap of three years, the 60-year-old playback singer is excited. “I am performing in Hyderabad after three years. Would have loved to come back sooner but now that I am here, I can’t wait to perform with my group of musicians in front of such an energetic crowd. Hyderabad has always been special for me,” says the singer.

Sanu will be belting out his hit Bollywood numbers during the two and a half hour performance. “I like the audience to be engaged with the numbers I am singing and do not repeat my songs at any of my concerts. There are thousands of songs that I have lent my voice to with so many other singers, so why bore my audience by singing the same songs? Most of my iconic hits are with Alka Yagnik though,” explains Sanu.

Elaborating on his Telugu connection, he shares, “I have sung in many languages in my decades long career and Telugu is one of them. Just a few days ago, I recorded a song for an upcoming Tollywood movie.”

Sanu says that good lyrics and melody matter rather than the production house and big banners. “I have come a long a way to think of such trivial matters.

Nowadays, most big Bollywood houses are focussing on item numbers to garner more money, but they have forgotten that lyrics should be the soul of a song and not what you see visually,” he says, adding, “I still record a song almost every day — offers are not yet drying up for good songs.” According to Sanu, every budding singer should train hard and remember their Indian roots.
