After her interesting role in the recent film Jawan, Priya Mani takes on the role of a contract killer in her latest film — QG Part 1.

Director Vivek Kumar Kannan, a former assistant to ace Bala, helms this project. In an exclusive conversation with DC, Vivek explains the film’s background and his vision. “My research took me to various parts of the country, including Mumbai’s Dharavi slum. I explored the organised crime scene and researched notorious gangsters, particularly the ‘Quotation Gang’ based in Kerala. I found that many women were deeply involved in criminal activities.

The book Queens of Mumbai also served as an inspiration. When it came to casting the lead, Priya Mani was my first choice.” Elaborating on Priya Mani’s character, Vivek says, “She plays Shakuntala, a contract killer, a woman of few words, who lets her actions speak volumes. She works under a dada named Mustafa, played by Jackie Shroff.” He said he was aiming for a raw look and Priya Mani is shown sans makeup, and draped in saris. “Tribal tattoos on her neck emphasise her background,” he adds.

The film, a dark psychological thriller, has multiple storylines. “In Chennai, we follow a young girl addicted to drugs played by Sara Arjun. In Kashmir, the narrative shifts to Seera (Sakuntala’s adopted daughter) and Rubina, who are in a lesbian relationship and face a tragic turn of events. QG — Part 1 is a hyperlink movie, bringing these disparate stories together,” explains Vivek.

The film also addresses LGBTQ issues. It features Sunny Leone as Jackie Shroff’s wife, and Ashraf portrays a rival gangster.
