Deepika Padukone won't hesitate speaking in American accent if required

Mumbai: Deepika Padukone rose to international fame when she got cast as one of the female leads in Vin Diesel’s 'xXx: Return of Xander Cage'. Once the first theatrical trailer released, no one could help but notice her delightfully Indian accent in the trailer.

While everyone believed she’ll be maintaining the accent throughout her international projects in the future and that it’s homage of sorts to her ethnicity, Deepika begs to differ.

“I wanted to play an Indian girl in the movie… That’s one of the things that drew me to the part. My roots are Indian in xXx3 and there is no reason why I should speak with an American accent. But it also depends on the role that I do. You can’t generalise. The role required me to speak like an Indian girl which I did. Tomorrow, I may do a film which may require me to play an Indian-American, so there, an accent may be required," DNA quoted her as saying.

Priyanka Chopra, widely considered her direct competitor, has often come in for a lot of flak for her American accent in her TV show, ‘Quantico,’ despite playing an American native in it. However, Deepika, who’s currently working on Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus ‘Padmavati,’ alongside Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor, stuck to her Indian accent to great effect.

It remains to be seen how her role pans out in the film, and for that, we must await the release of the highly anticipated film.
