Ranbir Kapoor reveals why he signed Shamshera, the 'film he was looking for'

Ranbir's next after Sanju and Brahmastra will be a dacoit drama helmed by Karan Malhotra for YRF.

It does seem that Ranbir Kapoor has taken on the Sanjay Dutt character rather seriously. Sanjay Dutt, if one recalls, had debuted as a child artiste in father Sunil Dutt’s dacoit drama Reshma Aur Shera that was also the first film Amitabh Bachchan had signed. And after that Dutt went on to do dacoit roles in Jeeva and Jai Vikranta among others.

In fact, late Sunil Dutt has been the biggest exponent of the dacoit genre with 20 films as a dacoit to his credit. And Ranbir’s next film after Sanju and Brahmastra will be a dacoit drama helmed by Karan Malhotra for Yash Raj Films called Shamshera. “Shamshera is exactly the film I was looking for.

While growing up watching Hindi commercial cinema, I had an image of what a film hero should be doing. Shamshera allows me to do everything that I had imagined and it’s a very exciting project for me. Karan is going to take me completely out of my comfort zone and I’m looking forward to this challenge,” said Ranbir in a statement about the daku-drama.

Shamshera will be going on floors by the end of this year and will be completed by June 2019. Incidentally, Sushant Singh Rajput and Bhumi Pednekar are also essaying dacoit roles in the Abhishek Chaubey film Son Chiriya. From the veteran actors’ lot, Amitabh Bachchan, Sunil Dutt, Vinod Khanna, Sridevi, Seema Biswas, Pran and of course Amjad Khan have essayed dacoits before. Now, something that Ranbir would try and emulate.
