Clash of the biopics: Ranbir's Dutt and Diljit's Soorma book the same release date

With Rajkumar Hirani finally zeroing in on a release date for his upcoming Sanjay Dutt biopic, makers of hockey player Sandeep Singh’s biopic Soo-rma are in a quandary.

The biopic, tentatively titled Dutt, has pushed the release date to June 29. As a result of this, the makers of Soorma aren’t all too sure about their release date.

“These films may be different from each other, but they are both biopics,” says a trade source. Soorma is the biopic of hockey player Sandeep Singh and stars Diljit Dosanjh and Taapsee Pannu in lead roles. “While hockey player Sandeep comes with a large following in the north and among hockey fans, Dutt will be followed by fans of not just Dutt and Ranbir Kapoor, but also fans of Hirani’s films,” the trade source tells us.

This means that the clash at the box office is inevitable. “Because both of them are biopics, there will be a certain degree of overlap among the audiences and it is bound to affect the collections of both films,” the trade source explains.

While the clash will not be exactly akin to the clash of the Bhagat Singh biopics that one saw sixteen years ago, it is certainly bound to create some degree of eating of the ticket sales.
