Gurmeet Choudhary and Debina Bonnerjee to adopt two girls from Bihar village

The couple decided to adopt the girls after learning about their difficult situation in their village.

Mumbai: After almost six years of marriage, one of the most popular couples of television, Gurmeet Choudhary and Debina Bonnerjee are all set to become parents. The couple has decided to adopt two girls from Gurmeet’s village Jarampur in Bihar.

The couple had met the girls, Pooja (6) and Lata (9), who are first cousins, at a wedding in Jarampur in 2014 and the two girls were living with Lata’s father at that time. However, the death of Lata’s father last year forced the girls to move in with a relative and hence had no option but to work as domestic helps at houses to fend for themselves.

Gurmeet’s mother, who stayed in the girls' vicinity, was especially concerned about the well-being of the girls and told her son about it. Gurmeet told Mumbai Mirror, “After hearing about their plight from my mother I discussed them with my wife. Debina agreed with me that it was time to give the kids a home, a deserving education and my last name.”

Gurmeet had earlier planned to only take care of the financial expenses of the girls but later decided to adopt them after considering the lack of facilities in the village. "All the paperwork is done. We will be going to Jarampur for the final signatures after Holi. It is a two-day process. Everybody, including my parents, keep asking me when I'm planning a baby. Well, it's official now, I'm bringing home two daughters and we couldn't be more excited," Gurmeet says.

The girls won’t be shifting to Mumbai immediately but would be staying in Patna till next year. He says, "After one academic year, they will shift in with us in our Andheri home by 2018. My brother and his family live in Patna and they will be around to see that they are well cared for. Debina and I will travel to Patna three-four times in the year and stay there through their summer vacation too.”

While Gurmeet has been discussing with his mother about the well-being of the girls, he has also discussed with Lata the adoption formalities and received her consent for the same.

The couple is also keen to have their own children in the future. Gurmeet reveals, "The general belief is that you only adopt if you can't have children of your own. That's not true at all. Both Debina and I love kids and plan to have a couple of our own in the future. And when they come along they will be siblings for Pooja and Lata and all the Choudharys will happily live together under one roof."

On the professional front, Gurmeet will next be seen opposite Akshara Haasan in ‘Laali Ki Shaadi Mein Laaddoo Deewana’ while Debina is part of the television serial, ‘Santoshi Maa.’
