I hated Arjun Rampal for seven years: Anurag Kashyap

Anurag Kashyap visited Hindu college in Delhi and had an intense yet candid conversation with the students.

Mumbai: The ‘Dev D’ director was ushered into the premises of Hindu College amidst loud music. The song? ‘Taar bijli se patle humare piya’ from his now famous film ‘The Gangs of Wasseypur 2’. Kashyap, an alumus of Hansraj college, blushingly said, “Maza aa raha hai, bahut yaadein judi hui hai is jagah se.

Anurag had initially dreamed of becoming a scientist but fate had other plans for the ‘Gulaal’ director and he took a liking to theatre, thanks to his director friend Imtiaz Ali who, Anurag revealed, had ‘inculcated the love of theatre in me’. The outspoken director had no qualms in admitting that moving to Mumbai was a step taken after Shah Rukh Khan tasted success.

Kashyap said, “It was Imtiaz and Sunit, another friend from Ramjas who inculcated the love of theatre in me. He had a theatre group in. Main uske peeche ghoomta tha acting ke liye and in 1993, we planned to move to Mumbai… We actually followed Sharukh’s footsteps and when Sharukh got name and fame, everyone thought they could also do it.”

While addressing the students, Kashyap made a rather funny confession about all-time heartthrob Arjun Rampal. The otherwise serious director had once been in love and the girl ditched him for Rampal. The then heartbroken lover went on to hate the handsome hunk.

An embarrassed Anurag revealed, “There was this girl from Miranda who ditched me for Arjun (actor Arjun Rampal) and I hated him for seven years.”

Anurag was very open about almost everything- from his then introvert nature to facing Censorship now.

Anurag further added, “Censorship changes with whoever is leading it. According to them, our audience is not ready for such content and we always say ki hamari audience bachche nahi hain. They know what they are watching… It was during my college days that I wrote the black and white sequence of the movie ‘Raman Raghav’. But I was an introvert and kept my work to myself. In fact, Sunit (his college friend) had saved my work.”
