Great time to be a woman in Bollywood: Sonakshi Sinha

Says actress Sonakshi Sinha, who talks about her new avatar in Akira.

With her new power-packed role in Akira, Sonakshi Sinha is all set to break bones and barriers at the same time. Sona, who stars in the film directed by A.R. Murugadoss, has put in tremendous training to perfect the role of a fighting lead in the women-centric film.

And not just that, the multi-tasker has even given her voice to a song in the film’s music score, composed by Vishal-Shekhar. Here’s what she has to say about working in the path-breaking film and its various aspects:

Action:

The trailer alone is enough to convince any and everyone that Sona, as Akira, means business. Telling us about the action sequences, she says, “I am far from being a pro but I did learn a lot from this film. It feels fantastic when you learn something new and apply it for a film. It is a very satisfying feeling. The journey has been amazing and all the characters I’ve played so far seem to have come together for this one moment for me in Akira.

Singing:

She seems to be following in the footsteps of Salman Khan, who first launched her in Dabangg. However, Sona wants to take things one step at a time. “I do want to have a career in music. Mujhe singing aur dancing ka bahut shauk hai, (I know it sounds like the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai dialogue) and hopefully I get to sing more. I released one single and I also sang for Akira. I am very happy that I recorded the song with Vishal and Shekhar, who were tremendously helpful. I would like to release more songs. That’s the plan,” reveals the actress.

Promise fulfilled:

While she was judging the singing reality show Indian Idol Junior 2, Sonakshi was so impressed with Nahid, one of the contestants, that she promised her a song in her movie. The actress has now fulfilled that promise with Akira. She says, “I had promised a song to her and I am happy that with the help of Vishal and Shekhar, it came through. Nahid is supremely talented and I used to get goosebumps listening to her from the judge’s chair. I am happy I was able to keep my promise.”

Women oriented roles:

Talking to us about women taking up central characters in movies, Sona says, “It’s about time they did. There are some great characters being written for women in today’s films. Even the audiences have become very accepting of what they are watching on screen. It’s a great time to be a woman in Bollywood and Indian cinema.”
