Clean, green and glowing goals for New Year beauty

Exfoliate negativity and ring in the New Year with beauty goals that embrace inclusivity, celebrate diversity

In the year 2023, several beauty trends made a significant impact and left us wanting more. From Hollywood and Bollywood celebrities venturing big time into makeup and skincare businesses to trends like skinimalism, clean beauty, and the rise of J beauty, consumers were spoilt for choices in every segment. While skinimalism gained traction as people embraced natural beauty and minimalistic skincare routines. Vegan beauty also soared in popularity, reflecting the increasing demand for cruelty-free and sustainable products. Looking ahead, top beauty experts predict what’s in store for 2024.

Crystal Clear

The breakout beauty trend of 2023, the “glass skin” phenomenon, rightly took the spotlight for its refreshing approach. Unlike traditional makeup-heavy routines, this trend encourages a focus on skincare, emphasizing healthy practices and quality skincare products for a radiant complexion, mentions Dr Blossom Kochhar, Chairperson of Blossom Kochhar Group of Companies. She says that it’s more than a passing trend. “It’s a shift towards understanding individual skin needs and promoting a holistic lifestyle. The enduring appeal lies in its empowerment of individuals to embrace their natural beauty, making it a beauty revolution set to persist in the upcoming year. In essence, the glass skin trend is about more than appearance — it’s a celebration of feeling good in your skin,” says Dr Kochhar.

Pro-Planet Beauty

The year 2023 in beauty and skincare witnessed a surge in sustainable beauty practices, with a heightened emphasis on eco-friendly packaging and cruelty-free formulations. The conscious consumer sought products aligning with ethical values, driving a notable shift towards clean beauty and vegan alternatives. Sukhleen Aneja, CEO of Good Brands Co & Good Glamm Group, advocates for self-love becoming the next big trend in the beauty industry. She adds, “This year, we’ve observed a positive shift in societal attitudes towards body acceptance, fostering a culture of embracing one’s true self. Personalized skin care gained momentum, with advancements in technology enabling tailored solutions for individual needs. Virtual try-on experiences and augmented reality tools played a significant role in enhancing the online beauty shopping journey. Personally, I endorse the beauty trends that prioritize authenticity and self-love. In an era dominated by social media, it’s crucial to recognize that the curated virtual existence of others is not our reality. And, the trends that we don’t want to see are unattainable ideals through heavily edited images on social media and makeup where people apply layers and layers of foundation that leads to wastage.”

Keep It Clean

Clean beauty developed over time from a catchphrase to a revolutionary movement that is changing beauty and skincare standards worldwide. As a result, what started as a fad soon evolved into a way of life for beauty enthusiasts. Sanshi Aggarwal, Founder of Flossy Cosmetics says, “Gone are the days when individuals used to shop mindlessly based on the brand’s name and packaging. After the misery caused by the pandemic, the surge in consumer demands for cruelty-free, non-toxic, and vegan beauty products has changed the dynamics of the beauty industry. The buzz created by the adoption of these products has pushed customers to focus on the natural ingredients the brands are using, the values and ethos they follow, and their impact on the planet.”

Packed With Tech

The New Year beauty goals embrace inclusivity, diversity, and authenticity, aiming to empower individuals to feel confident in their unique attributes. Clean beauty continued to be a major trend, with consumers prioritizing products free from harmful ingredients. According to Ritika Jayaswal, founder of Nourish Mantra, “Looking ahead I feel that sustainability will remain a key focus in the beauty space. More brands will adopt eco-friendly packaging and sustainable sourcing practices. Customiz-ed skincare will also gain momentum, as consumers seek personalized solutions tailored to their specific needs. Additionally, the integration of technology and beauty will continue to evolve, with innovations such as virtual try-on experiences and AI-powered skincare analysis.”

Min Effect, Max Impact

From the ethereal glow-up highlighter to the bold red lips, 2023’s beauty board was defined by all things visionary, both in terms of application and final effect. Yet, the biggest highlight was the rise of “minimalistic makeup” routines. “Given how stratospheric the clean-girl makeup trend went during 2023, but heading into next year, healthy, minimal makeup looks will continue to headline. Spanning skin-nourishing glossy formulas and youthful sun-kissed pigments, consumers will strive for complexion products exuding health and vitality," informs Ananya Kapur, founder of Type Beauty Inc.
