Anurag Kashyap on How Bombay Velvet Strained His Bond with Ranbir, Anushka

Kashyap discusses the awkwardness he felt in facing Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma post-Bombay Velvet, highlighting how the film's failure affected their once-close bond.

A decade after the release of Bombay Velvet, its director has opened up about how the film’s failure impacted his relationship with its lead actors.

In a recent interview with Screen, renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap revealed that following the box office failure of his 2015 film Bombay Velvet, he decided he would never collaborate again with Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma.

Kasyap mentioned that Kapoor gets distressed whenever he talks about the film and said, "I think Ranbir was very upset, and he keeps saying, ‘Why do you keep talking about Bombay Velvet? Just ignore it. The film didn’t work, it didn’t work, but you don’t have to talk about it all the time.’ But people ask me questions all the time — how can I just ignore that?"
He further recollected his hesitation of facing the lead actors after the movies failure and disclosed of becoming distant with the lead actors. "We don’t meet often. Whenever we meet, we just hug and greet each other. And at the beginning, I just didn’t know how to face them because they had given me a lot of trust and love. And I was dealing with my own demons. So I needed to come out of that and make a very small film. I was very focused on Raman Raghav. But slowly, I think, we became distant," he said.
Kasyap further revealed that the fiasco was in a manner that when they carried out a research, they found out an appalling thing which was people didn't like Kapoor's hair. He called it the weird reason and remarked that curling kapoor's hair for the movies was a conscious choice that had been made.
Bombay Velvet was a neo-noir period crime film, based on the book Mumbai Fables, written by Gyan Prakash. The movie featured Ranbir Kapoor, Anushka Sharma, and Karan Johar in lead roles, along with Kay Kay Menon, Vivaan Shah, Siddhartha Basu and Manish Choudhary in the supporting roles.
As per Sacnilk, the film was made on the budget of 115 crore rupees and its collection was 43 and 23. 71 crore rupees worldwide and nationwide respectively.
