This film, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and signifying a major milestone in the life of the young actress and taking her far beyond her comfort zone, represented a major turning point in her acting career so far.

Recently, Alia Bhatt spoke about what may very well be the most influential acting job of her life so far, recalling her experience with the title character in Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022). This film, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and signifying a major milestone in the life of the young actress and taking her far beyond her comfort zone, represented a major turning point in her acting career so far.
When asked about her experience of being part of this production, Alia stated that the character was both intimidating and transforming for her. In fact, she confessed that she took up Gangubai as a character purely out of her trust and faith in the script and the director’s vision for the movie. As she told the audience during the Red Sea International Film Festival in Saudi Arabia, "It was one of the most risky roles that I've done. I was not sure if I could do it. I completely relied on Sanjay sir’s vision for this role. Either it would work completely or it wouldn’t work.”
Along with having the technical efficiency necessary in the character as an accomplishment, Alia Bhatt shared that the character made a long-term impact on her emotionally as well. The strength, tenacity, and vulnerability of Gangubai remained with her even after the completion of the film. To refer to the character having a long-term impact on her emotionally as the longest, Alia Bhatt expressed, “Gangubai Kathiawadi remains the character that has stayed with me the longest on an emotional level.”
Her display was widely appreciated and ensured that the movie was a landmark in her acting career.
