Hyderabad: The Film Editing Department at Annapurna College of Film and Media (ACFM) recently hosted an intensive masterclass with popular editor Ravi Teja Girijala.
Known for his seamless storytelling in hits like Pelli Choopulu, C/o Kancharapalem, Ee Nagaraniki Emaindi, Ante Sundaraniki, and Cinema Bandi, Girijala shared a masterclass in the "unseen art" of filmmaking. He challenged students to look beyond the software, stating that storytelling in the editing suite is a completely different than storytelling on paper.
According to Girijala, the editor serves as the film’s first true viewer. To succeed, one must evaluate material objectively, stripped of the emotional attachment that comes with the grueling shooting process. He noted that great editing often requires brutal decisions, including removing scenes or even entire characters that deviate the viewer from the core narrative.
Throughout the session, Girijala discussed narrative compression, shot duration, and rhythm, noting that emotional needs should guide pacing rather than formulaic structures. He urged students to develop internal conviction and intuition by watching diverse global cinema and unlearning rigid approaches. As practical advice, he highlighted the importance of developing a habit of visually narrating scenes in terms of shots and edits rather than simply describing the plot.
Students found the session highly engaging, appreciating his candid discussion on industry realities, collaboration with directors, and professional ethics. This masterclass is part of Annapurna College’s ongoing initiative to connect students with industry professionals and strengthen their understanding of contemporary filmmaking practices.
