7.5 lakh students go abroad for studies in 2022

Chennai: In 2022, 7.5 lakh Indian students went abroad to pursue studies, against 4.4 lakh in 2021.

As per data shared by the Bureau of Immigration with the Diaspora Engagement Division, Ministry of External Affairs, 7,50,365 students went abroad for further studies in 2022. This was 69 per cent higher than the number of students who left the country for studies in 2021. In 2021, 4,44,553 students went abroad. In 2020, the number was almost half of 2021 at 2,59,655.

During the pandemic years, the number of students travelling abroad fell drastically due to the restrictions. In 2019, 5,86,337 students had pursued education abroad while the number was 5,18,015 in 2018. However, 2022 saw the highest number of departures of students from India.

In the past five years, a total of 25.58 lakh students have gone abroad seeking education in foreign universities and institutions.

This data has been collated by the Bureau of Immigration, while seeking the purpose of Indians going abroad. This is captured manually based either on their verbal disclosure or the type of visa of the destination country produced by them at the time of immigration clearance, the government told the Rajya Sabha.
