RGUKT all set for a fresh academic year

Hyderabad: Despite a slew of controversies in the past academic year, Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) is all set to enter another one armed with multiple changes in the system.

Popularly known as the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Basar, the university will publish the notification for admission to the 6-year integrated BTech programme for the academic year 2023-2023, online on June 1, 2023, on the official website rgukt.ac.in.

The online application forms will be released on June 5, with June 19 and 24 being the last days of online and print applications, respectively.

“Admissions will be based on merit in the Grade Point Average (GPA) and Grade obtained in each subject in Class 10, and by following the statutory reservations of the state,” said V. Venkata Ramana, Vice Chancellor, IIIT Basar. A deprivation score of 0.4 prescribed by the government for the year 2023-24 will be added to the GPA of those applicants who studied in non-residential government schools including the Zilla Parishad and Municipal Schools, to provide weightage to the socio-economically challenged students in the admission process.

“Candidates should have passed SSC (10th Class) or any other equivalent examinations in the first attempt, recognised by the state governments of Telangana & Andhra Pradesh in 2023. Also, those above 18 years on June 1, 2023, and (21 years in the case of students under the SC/ST categories), are not eligible to apply,” the VC specified. He mentioned a special invitee of the government admission committee will be present during the counselling.
“We have also asked for welfare departments to be present on the day of admissions so students don’t have to run pillar to post for certificates and approvals,” he added.

To ensure transparency in admitting students, the college will conduct a two-step verification. While last year saw over 33,000 admissions, the management expects a slight drop of a few hundred.

“It has nothing to do with the college but more with engineering and medicine no longer being the only good courses to opt for. Humanities, social sciences, communication, law, etc., are seeing an increase in admissions versus engineering,” Ramana told ‘Deccan Chronicle’.

The university was in the news last year for all the wrong reasons -two student suicides, ragging, poor quality of food and much more. The academic year saw several protests that disturbed the functioning of the college for a brief while.

Talking about changes made to counter the problems, Ramana said, “We have worked upon various areas that we’ve fallen back on - we now have an integrated kitchen that will help maintain the highest standards. We have counsellors on campus whom students can reach out to. People can also post complaints anonymously on a site we will start this year – “Let’s share”. I will personally look into each of the matters brought to light. We also have an internal anti-ragging committee that will ensure no such acts take place and no mercy will be shown to perpetrators,” he asserted.

Asked about the suicides, Ramana added that the university has taken into consideration the need to bring in a system where students will have to give their exams only towards the end of the year and not just weeks after they get into college.

“This will certainly ensure students are under no particular pressure to get into serious academics the minute they enter college. We will also have students delve deep into their areas of interest be it sports, art and even innovation. We will soon have a space dedicated to us at the Nizamabad IT Hub to meet, discuss and showcase innovative ideas/presentations.”

The vice chancellor added that the focus this year will be on retaining female students. “There has been a slight increase in female students’ dropout, due to various issues, primarily, marriage. We will counsel parents at the very beginning and whenever needed against discontinuing what could be a bright future. We will also have a dedicated gynaecologist visit the campus on Tuesdays and Wednesdays,” said Ramana.

The management hopes to complete the admission process by July 1, a month earlier than the previous academic year, thanks to the early declaration of Class 10 results. IIIT- Basar will release a provisional selection list on June 26th and Phase 1 counselling will be on July 1. Details regarding the application, admission, reservation and course fees will be available on their website. A helpline for admission-related queries in English, Telugu and Hindi languages is to be set up soon.
