Prof. Santanu takes over as director, IISER, Tirupati

TIRUPATI: Santanu Bhattacharya, professor in Department of Organic Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, on Wednesday assumed office as director of the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Tirupati.

He succeeds Prof. K.N. Ganesh, the founder director of IISER, Tirupati.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Ganesh expressed confidence that having played leadership roles in two of the oldest science Institutes in the country – IISc, Bengaluru, and IACS, Kolkata, Prof. Santanu will help IISER, Tirupati, reach greater heights.

Officer on Special Duty Dr. C.P. Mohan Kumar and other faculty and staff of IISER Tirupati were present on the occasion.

Prof. Santanu Bhattacharya is known for his research in molecular design of natural and synthetic lipids, and membranes for gene delivery, as well as synthesis of novel peptides for sequence-specific DNA recognition and biologically active natural products.

He got elected to Indian Academy of Sciences in 2000, Indian National Science Academy in 2007 and the World Academy of Sciences in 2012.
