Maneka Guruswamy adds another feather to cap, named trustee of Rhodes Trust

Hyderabad: Supreme Court advocate Dr Maneka Guruswamy was appointed a trustee of the Rhodes Trust, which awards the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship to international postgraduate students to study at the Oxford University of England.

The Hyderabad-born lawyer is the first person from India to be appointed a trustee by the Rhodes Trust. In 2017, she also become the first Indian to win a space in the corridors of Oxford University, by being the first Indian to have her portrait hung at Rhodes House.

She was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship for a Bachelor in Law course at the University of Oxford in 2000 and the Gammon Fellowship to pursue a master's in law at Harvard Law School in 2001. Dr Maneka obtained her D.Phil from the University of Oxford in 2015, with her thesis titled ‘Constitutionalism in India, Pakistan and Nepal’.

Initially restricted to male applicants from Commonwealth nations, Germany and the United States, the scholarship is now open to applicants from all backgrounds and genders around the world.
