HCU suicide: Smriti Irani sends two-man team to Hyderabad

Protests were held outside Ms Irani's office and residence on Monday.

New Delhi: The human resource development ministry has sent a two-member fact-finding team to Hyderabad to investigate the suicide of Dalit PhD scholar Rohith Vemula even as protests raged in New Delhi and Hyderabad.

Congress, CPI demand resignation
As the matter took a political turn, several political parties, including the Congress and CPI(M-L), demanded the resignations of both Union labour minister of state for labour Bandaru Dattatreya and HRD minister Smriti Irani. Protests were held outside Ms Irani’s office and residence on Monday.

Ms Irani said the government neither intervenes in the functioning of the university nor does it have any administrative control over it. She said she would not make any political statement but await the report of the fact-finding committee that had gone to Hyderabad.
