Only 70 per cent of the syllabus over, say inter students in Telangana

HYDERABAD: Highlighting the tough times they are facing ahead of the intermediate exams, first and second-year students of government junior colleges have said that only 70 per cent syllabus has been taught so far and not 90 per cent as claimed by their teachers. Less than two months are left for intermediate final exams while only one month is left for practical examination.

According to students, the lecturers are rushing with the portion, explaining only the basics, and giving the rest of the chapters as homework, especially when it comes to Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. “We are asked to practice over 120 Math problems as revision in one day. They are only bothered about the written material we submit. When we fail to solve the problems in one day, we are held back in colleges and made to copy-paste answers from others,” said a bunch of second-year students requesting anonymity. Students said as the teachers rushed through most of the chapters, they have not understood properly all that has been taught.

A few students said that when they approached the principal regarding this, they were “threatened”. “Our ID cards are taken away and we are threatened with rustication if the lecturers know that we have complained against them,” said girl students of a government junior college.

Highlighting other issues, students said that due to a shortage of teachers, at times a few classes are clubbed.

Echoing the problems raised by the students Dr P. Madhusudhan Reddy, president of the Government Junior Lecturers Association said that the syllabus was supposed to be completed by December 2022 and it is still pending. He said that the practical exams should be postponed to April. There is a huge shortage of lecturers due to which 50 per cent of the junior colleges are functioning in two shifts. Thus students do not get the time they need.

“There is a requirement of 6,000 government junior lecturers in Telangana. However, we have only 1,000 lecturers on a regular basis and 300 are on contract. There are over 2,000 vacancies out of which permission has been granted for 1,654 guest faculties in September 2022. However, 1,800 teachers
are still required,” he added.
