Kakatiya University students see irregularities in Ph.D admissions

WARANGAL: Students seeking admission to Ph.D courses and representatives of several student unions staged a dharna in front of the principal's home at Kakatiya University in Hanamkonda, alleging irregularities in Ph.D admissions.

The students alleged that the vice-chancellor of the university, along with the registrar and deans of several departments, came to an agreement and sold admissions for higher prices, allotting seats to ineligible candidates without following any rules.

Candidates from low-income families worked hard and studied for the exams in order to secure Ph.D. places. However, for different reasons, university administrators did not choose them and later sold around 75 per cent of Ph.D seats under category-2 to part-time and government employees, the students leaders said.

When candidates did not receive Ph.D. seats and later discovered that anomalies in seat allotment happened by shifting seats to part-time and government employees, they decided to organise a peaceful dharna to bring the issue to the attention of higher authorities.

Students' union representatives urged that the state government conduct an investigation into discrepancies in Ph.D admissions under category-2.
When the police sought to remove students out of the principal chamber who were attempting to conduct a dharna inside, a fierce altercation ensued between police officials and student union leaders, during which some students were injured.

Police officers, on the other hand, brought the situation under control by shifting the student union leaders to the police station. Among those present were ABVP leaders Ambala Kiran, Prashanth, Macharla Rambabu, Ajay, Srikanth, BC student union leaders Nagaraju, Shankar, and All Universities Student Union leaders Matteda Kumar and Venkatesh.
