Infant theft: Woman ends life in Dharwad central jail

She was sent to judicial custody after being produced before the court on Tuesday.

Hubballi: Twenty-eight year old Surekha Kawade, who was arrested for stealing an eleven-day-old baby from Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), has committed suicide by hanging herself in Dharwad central jail on Thursday.

She was sent to judicial custody after being produced before the court on Tuesday. Her husband, however, has alleged that harassment by the police personnel forced her to end her life.

The woman, who used to work as a housemaid, stole the baby by posing as a nurse. However, following a tip off by her neighbours, the police arrested her.

Her husband Pratap said, “I wanted to return the stolen baby to the parents, before the police arrested my wife. The police personnel have severely beaten my wife and her gold necklace went missing. This might have forced her to commit suicide as she was already depressed for not having a child.”

KIMS Director Dr Dattatreya Bant said that action would be initiated against four security personnel for their lapses.
