Watch: Karnataka jail inmates treated with 'item number' during R-Day celebrations

Prison authorities arranged two dance girls from Mumbai purportedly to reward prisoners for their good behaviour.

Vijayapura: Inmates of the central jail of Vijayapura were in for a treat when an 'item dance' was arranged for them during this year's Republic Day celebrations on Tuesday.

Prison authorities arranged two dance girls from Mumbai purportedly to reward the prisoners for their good behaviour.

While some swayed to the tunes of music, others were seen throwing cash at the dancers to appreciate their moves.

The entertainment programme was held before the formal function in which district in-charge Minister MB Patil and deputy commissioner participated.

The formal Republic Day programme was held at 3 pm on Tuesday during which 38 inmates were released.

The Karnataka Government suspended the officials of Vijayapura's Central Jail, who had organised the celebrations.

"I have asked the prison officials to keep those involved in it under suspension," Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara told reporters here.

"The Supreme Court has given direction to release the prisoners on the basis of their conduct, character and behaviour after 14 years of imprisonment, so that is the law not that they have allowed superintendents to conduct dances and all," he added.
