Powerloom unit owners to begin strike today

Repeated memoranda to the State government and cloth manufacturers were in vain.

Tirupur: The job working powerloom unit owners in Coimbatore and Tirupur districts will begin an indefinite strike on Thursday over weaving charge issue as planned, as the talks held by Tirupur district collector on Wednesday failed to convince them to give up the protest.

The pact for weaving charge revision was signed between the job working power loom unit owners and cloth manufacturers in 2014 and they agreed for 27 per cent and 30 per cent wage hike respectively for Palladam and Somanur varieties respectively. However, the Coimbatore and Tirupur district Job Working Powerloom Unit Owners Association alleged that the cloth manufacturers provided the accepted wage hike only for three months and then stopped it.

The functionaries of the association represented to the various officials and ministers on the issue and sought the government's intervention to solve it.

Repeated memoranda to the State government and cloth manufacturers were in vain.

Recently, an urgent meeting of the association was convened here by the president of Tirupur District Powerloom Unit Owners Association, Mr Velusamy.
