Bengaluru: Wife of brigand's associate lucky too
Mysuru: Revathi, wife of forest brigand Veerappan’s associate Amburaj and the mother of an eight-month-old baby girl, was among 42 life term convicts released from the central jail in Mysuru on Tuesday. They were released after serving 14 years of their life sentences and for good conduct.
Amburaj, who was in Central Jail in Mysuru, and Revathi, who was serving the term at Parappana Agrahara Central Jail, met while performing a play in Bengaluru.
They got married in 2011 while out on parole. Revathi was shifted to the Mysuru jail after Amburaj requested the prison authorities. They fell in love in the jail and got married in 2011 when they were out on parole.
Mr Baburaj, an advocate and director of People’s Legal Forum, said that Amburaj hails from Handiyur of Erode district Tamil Nadu.
“Veerappan took Amburaj away when he was just a child. He was a shepherd and the brigand wanted him as a labourer in his gang. But now, Amburaj has been slapped with charges under the Arms Act and he has already completed 14 years of his term. He was arrested and sent to jail when he was 17.”
He said, “Revathi, who too is from Erode, is an orphan. After both her parents died, she was taken to Chennai as a child labourer. She was then shifted to Bengaluru and from there she was to be trafficked to Mumbai for domestic work. When she resisted, she was stabbed in the shoulder.
She retaliated and stabbed her tormentor to death. At the time of her arrest, she was 16. Though the Juvenile Justice Act of 1986 set the age limit for girls at 18, we could not secure her release as we did not have any documents to prove her age,” he said.
