Pollution control board sends notice to Hyderabad's firm over pollution

The plant has been established on Survey No 56 which, according to HMDA, is reserved for residential purposes.

Hyderabad: The Pollution Control Board (PCB), based on a complaint filed by over 300 families of Golf View, a gated community in Nanakramguda, has issued a show cause notice to Best Infra Private Limited, which prepares ready mix concrete for upmarket gated communities.

The community alleged that the plant, which is located bang opposite the colony, works 20 to 22 hours a day and the resultant air and noise pollution has adversely affected the health of the 300 families.

The plant has been set up in Survey No. 56 which, according to the HMDA, is reserved for residential purposes.

The PCB in its notice said the plant was being operated without obtaining permission, which was a violation under Section 25/26 of Water Pollution (prevention and control) Act 1974 and under Section 21/22 of Air Pollution (prevention and control) Act 1981.

An inspection carried out by the board on Jan.12 revealed that Best Infra had not provided cladding to the conveyors to arrest the dust emission and that it had not provided metal roads to control the dust emission.

It was not carrying out regular cleaning and wetting of the ground within the premises.

Mr Vijay Agarwal, president of Golf View Owners Welfare Association, said, “The gated community has six blocks. The plant which is located behind the gated community used to supply concrete mix to our buildings as well.

"The plant is running 20 to 22 hours, resulting in heavy circulation of dust and noise pollution. We are unable to open our doors and windows, it has affected our health and children are unable to play freely".

"Dust settles on the buildings. The plant which is about 1,500 yards away is operating in a residential zone as per the HMDA website.”
The company has been given seven days to reply to the notice.
