Three hockey talents hailing from economically poor families in Coonoor made it to the state under-21 hockey team.

OOTY: Three hockey talents hailing from economically poor families in Coonoor made it to the state under-21 hockey team to play the national tourney.

While 2015 saw as many as eight hockey talents from the Nilgiris making it to the national level in various categories, the dawn of 2016 saw a school child selected to play in the national tourney in sub-junior hockey.

Now, three more hockey talents found their way to represent Tamil Nadu in the under-21 hockey team to play in the national tourney.

Mr S. Anantha Krishnan, president of the Hockey-Nilgiris, said that M. Rajkumar hailing from Gandhipuram near Coonoor, K. Sijumon from Katteri and R. Mani from Halorai village near Hubbathalai have been selected to play for the Tamil Nadu state under-21 team that will play at the 21st Vinod Khandkar Gold Cup All India Hockey tournament at Jhansi in UP.

“These youngsters, hailing from economically poor backgrounds as parents of two of them are daily wage earners, worked hard with grit and passion to carve a niche for them in hockey. They are now studying in Dr NGP College of Arts and Science at Coimbatore under full sponsorship for sportspersons,” Mr. Krishnan added.
