Coimbatore: Security beefed up for R-Day

More than 750 cops have been deployed at VOC grounds alone.

COIMBATORE: Tight security arrangements have been made for Republic Day celebrations at VOC park grounds in Coimbatore on Tuesday.

A three tier security has been in place at the venue, where armed police maintain a round the clock vigil. Public visiting the grounds will be allowed only after a thorough check with metal detectors.

Security arrangements were done under the supervision of the city police commissioner A.Amalraj and superintendent of police Ramya Bharathi. Bomb squad police and sniffer dogs were also pressed into service at the place.

“More than 750 cops have been deployed at the VOC grounds alone for security purpose. Cops from the respective stations will carry out surveillance in their jurisdiction,” said a police officer.

Police teams have been posted at religious establishments, government offices, railway stations, airport, shopping malls and other public places that witness heavy public movement.

Police have been posted in check posts and in sensitive places like Karumbukadai, Ukkadam, Aathupalam, Kuniamuthur, Kottaimedu, Kavundampalayam, P.N. Pudur, Perur and Sugunapuram.

Checks were also conducted among passengers in trains and their luggage is screened thoroughly. More over all the passengers entering and exiting the railway station were thoroughly checked.

Similarly the Central industrial security force been deputed at the Coimbatore airport. The entry of visitors to the airport has been restricted in view of the Republic Day celebrations.

While visitors are usually allowed to go up to the gallery at the terminal, now they are barred from entering the airport lounge.
All the passengers are also frisked and their baggage is checked compulsorily in view of the Republic Day.

More than 10,00 police personnel have been deputed in rural areas like Mettupalayam, Annur, Avinashi, Pollachi and in the border check posts like Walayar, Anaikatti, Velandavalam and Pillur check posts.
