Wifi hotspots turn a bane for Kozhikode Medical College Hospital

Outsiders intrude to use free internet

KOZHIKODE: The WiFi hotspots set up on the medical college campus by the city administration have turned out to be a bane rather than a boon for the women students and staff of the institution.

They are facing harassment from the hordes of people who sneak in without permission and use the facilities.

Dozens of youngsters from outside the medical college campus gather everyday near the Wifi hotspots installed at three localities of the hospital. They trouble the girl students of the college who are on night duty in the hospital.

Medicos say they have registered several complaints with the Medical College police station but no action has been taken so far.

The WiFi hotspots were a dream project of the district administration to provide free WiFi facility to thousands of people coming to the hospital and help students to access internet.

KMC Union chairman K Jishad said the issue came to the notice of the union two months back. “We have complained to the college authorities,” he said.

“But no action was taken to curb the people sneaking inside just for WiFi facilities.”

He said some officials came to the spot after they registered a complaint with the police but the situation has not changed. “If this is to continue, then we would ask the administration to take the facility off as the safety of girls is more important,” he added.

The college authorities said that immediate action will be taken to tighten security on the campus.

According to K.M. Bineesh, Medical College SI, a case was registered and action was taken against intruders several times.
