Compensation not enough: J G Prince

He also alleged there was no adequate flood alert by officials to people living along Cooum and Kosathalayar river banks.

Chennai: Cutting across party lines, opposition MLAs on Friday demanded more compensation for flood-hit victims. Congress MLA J. G. Prince said people had lost their livelihood due to the recent floods. The compensation given now is not sufficient for those affected by floods.

Echoing the issue, CPI (M) leader and Perambur legislator A. Soundararajan said while flood issues of south Chennai and release of Chembarambakkam surplus have been discussed in detail, water-logging in north Chennai went unnoticed. The water logging in Tiruvottriyur, Nandambakkam and Manali was so severe that even top civil servants were stranded in their houses.

He also alleged there was no adequate flood alert by officials to people living along Cooum and Kosathalayar river banks. Finance and public works minister O. Panneerselvam intervened and said the opposition wanted to use the natural calamity for political gains. He maintained that all necessary steps were taken by the government to save lives and public property.
