Kozhikode: Uma offers safer roads

App-making competition to be part of road safety campaign

KOZHIKODE:The city police will conduct an ‘app-making competition’ and other programmes in connection with the four-day ‘Road Safety Campaign’ which is to be launched on Saturday. City Police commissioner Uma Behera in her maidenpress conference here on Thursday said the app-making competition would be focused on the theme ‘road safety’ which the city police could use in future to improve traffic.

An expert panel including ADGP (North) Nithin Agarwal and experts of the cyber cell would examine the efficacy of the apps. “A cash award would be given to the inventor of the best app,” she said.

She urged engineering students and other expert youngsters to be part of the mission to ensure ‘safer roads and safe traffic’.Screening of traffic related tele-films and cartoons also would be organised.

Ms Behera said traffic is in a bad shape and it will be one of her focus areas as the head of the police force in city. “Road accidents are increasing,” she said. “I want to rectify the existing system transforming our roads safer and also the city more inhabitable with lesser crimes.”Issues like the fading zebra lines and other issues beyond the limits of police would be raised at the Road Safety Committee headed by district collector, she added. Drawing and painting by students of various schools, basic life support training, signature collection, traffic checking by Student Police Cadets, public pledge, eye testing and ear testing camps for drivers and vehicle rally from Ramanattukara to city beach are some of the programmes lined up for the campaign.

The campaign would include the experience sharing of road accident victims and their kith and kin on January 26. Deputy city police commissioner D. Sally also was present.
