Kochi: Rs189 crore for Metro Kakkanad stretch

Kochi: The state cabinet on Wednesday sanctioned Rs 189 crore for the preparatory works of the Kochi Metro extension from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Infopark via Kakkanad.

Though the state government had given its nod for the Rs 2,024- crore project, the centre is yet to sanction it.

The fund for the preparatory work has been sanctioned expecting the centre’s approval for the project. The extension is vital for optimal functioning of the Metro besides improving its financial condition, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said.

As per the proposal, there will be 11 stations - Palarivattom junction, Palarivattom bypass, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala, Kunnumpuram, Kakkanad junction, Kochi SEZ, Chittethukara, Rajagiri, Infopark I and Infopark II in the 11.2 km stretch to be constructed in phase-1 B.

“The preparatory works will include renovation of certain roads, their widening and land acquisition for the same among others. Such activities are vital for starting the actual works without major traffic congestion.

A total of 3.85 acres of land has to be acquired for widening the existing road to 22 metres. For construction activities, 8.65 acres has to be acquired, a Metro official said. The state and the centre will chip in with Rs 300 crore each.

As per a study by the Rail India Technical and Economic Services (RITES), the passenger traffic from JN stadium to Kakkanad would be 1.26 lakh in 2021 and 1.98 lakh in 2031.
