Hyderabad: Seven-year-old Master Pardhu Thejavath, a high risk thalassemia patient, underwent allogeneic bone marrow transplant surgery at the American Oncology Institute which has been successful.
The procedure was done in August last but the doctors had to check whether the body complied with and responded to it positively.
The final tests carried out in the first week of January have shown that the child is normal and does not require any transfusions in future.
The bone marrow cells were taken from his sister and then transplanted in him.
Dr Srinivas Bacchu, consultant haemato-oncologist and bone marrow transplant specialist, said, “Usually these procedures are undertaken when the child is three or four years old.
"But due to modern medicines and new drugs it has now proven to be successful even in children who are older. His sister’s blood group matched and hence we could go ahead with the process."
