Change gives TRS upper hand

MLCs now can register as voters in GHMC limits.

Hyderabad: The GHMC Act already allows all the MLAs and MPs (Lok Sabha) elected under GHMC limits to be ex-officio members of the Corporation having voting rights in Mayor and Deputy Mayor post elections. Since MLCs do not have any particular constituency and the entire state is taken as their jurisdiction, the TRS government brought the amendment to allow them to vote in the Mayor and Deputy Mayor elections if they have not already opted for any other municipality or municipal corporation.

It also allows the MLCs to get themselves registered as voters in GHMC limits afresh, duly cancelling their vote registered elsewhere in the state. The TRS has 29 MLCs in the House of 40, the Congress eight, BJP one, and the MIM two. The TRS has two MLAs from the 24 Assembly segments in GHMC and another four who switched sides from the TD. The MIM has seven, BJP five and the TD has six. The TD does not have representation in the Council and the Congress has no MLA from the city.
