Japanese aid for waste management

The Japanese team will present a detailed project report before the council to get its approval.

KOCHI: A six-member delegation from Japan has offered technical and financial assistance to the City Corporation in setting up an organic waste processing plant.

The delegation including government officials, industrialists and Embassy officials headed by Mr. Masafumi Yasue held discussions with deputy Mayor T.J. Vinod on Monday and briefed him about the project.

While traditional organic waste processing plants take more than 40 days to degrade garbage, Japanese technology, based on aerobic fermentation, needs only 10 to 14 days. High quality compost can be produced through the odour-less and eco-friendly method, claim the Japanese team.

“The team which visited the city a year ago has conducted a study on Brahmapuram plant and the solid waste management scenario in the city. Now, they are back with the study report and are ready to set up a pilot plant in Kochi. As the city is soon to have a modern waste to energy plant, Japanese technology will be more useful for other civic bodies,” said Dr. Rajan Chedambath, officer in charge of the Corporation’s international relations.
