DGP Jacob Thomas: Webcams won't bring transparency

Only 10 per cent of the bureaucrats in the state are sincere and efficient

KOCHI: In an apparent dig at Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who initiated live streaming of goings on at his office and the act of placing web cameras in government offices, Kerala Police Housing Construction Corporation managing director DGP Jacob Thomas said there won’t be transparency in Kerala just by installing web cameras in offices. “That belief is not true. It’s only a gimmick,” he said.

“Government officers are not the puppets of politicians and they have their own rights which the Supreme Court has also emphasised. Only 10 per cent of the bureaucrats in the state are sincere and efficient,” Jacob said at a media workshop on ‘Corruption and Media Vigilance’ organised by Ernakulam Press Club on Saturday.

“Investigation should not be goal oriented but should be truth oriented,” he said and added the present media is driven by 3 Ps -- people, politics and profit.
