Unique NH nest to bring back birds in Kozhikode

Artificial tree-shaped structure in Kozhikode.

Kozhikode: The bird population in Kozhikode that has lost its habitat due to the fast-paced development works can now rejoice. An artificial tree-shaped, two-storey structure is coming up on the side of the NH bypass project from Vengalam to Pooladikunnu that will provide adequate resting place and food for thousands of local and migratory birds.

This is the unique initiative of Uralungal Labour Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS), the infrastructure builders who have designed the bypass project.

The ULCCS itself admits that the rapid urbanisation and the expansion of the city are taking a toll on the migratory bird population.

The residents associations in the region will supply water and food for the birds regularly. Mr Sunil Kumar, ULCCS official said, “with the changing ecological set-up of our region owing to the rapid developments, we are losing the space for both our local and migratory birds...

“...We are aware that our construction projects disturb the life of these birds and hence we are introducing the first of its kind eco-friendly NH project that could help in building an ideal habitat for the birds in this region,” he added.

The structure with artificial branches on top of it and a small garden as the base will have space to store water and food for the birds, which can start occupying it from January 22.
