Cops, BBMP: Work in tandem!
BENGALURU: The Central Business District (CBD) areas such as Residency Road, Richmond Road and Commissariat Road would be choked if the BBMP do not work in tandem with the traffic police for adequate measures to divert traffic and execute the TenderSure project on time. Already the work has begun on Residency Road and Commissariat Road and it will begin on Richmond road shortly.
In an attempt to build credibility with the traffic cops and public, the BBMP is contemplating on implementing ‘Specific Window Time’ for utility agencies to complete works, failing which they would have to cough up penalty, said sources in BBMP. The penalty may begin from Rs 10,000. More than levying the penalty it’s making them accountable to complete their project in time.
“If the credibility on keeping up the deadline is built with the traffic cops, getting permission to divert traffic or to block a stretch of road would be easier. This will also prevent delay in any infrastructure projects, especially at the heart of the city or at CBD areas,” added sources.
The second aspect that the civic body is looking at having a third party approval for the works executed by other government agencies or to have an empanelled committee which can certify the quality of the work. This puts an end to pointing fingers at different agencies. BBMP commissioner G. Kumar Naik told Deccan Chronicle that the BBMP would monitor the work progress from the time the digging begins. After having spent two to three months in holding co-ordination meeting ensuring deadline, it should not be tough.
The BBMP cannot afford to ignore CBD areas or delay the projects there. Working only during night will definitely delay the project considering the active night life the area has. There is no point in carrying out work only during the night which will be a small window of time — less than five hours. Work should happen in two shifts and it would happen, assured Mr Naik. M.A. Saleem, additional commissioner of police (Traffic) told Deccan Chronicle that they enjoy a good co-ordination with BBMP and traffic diversions will be planned as and when the situation demands.
