IISER to get 5 foreign faculty

First phase campus inaugurated by HRD minister Smriti Irani

Thiruvananthapuram: The Department of Higher Education will allow IISER, Thiruvanan-thapuram, to recruit five foreign faculty members to improve research and international exposure to the students as part of the new Global Initiative of Academic Network (GIAN) of the ministry. The first faculty member would join by June.

Union Human Resource Development Minister Ms Smriti Zubin Irani inaugurated the first phase of the Vithura campus of Indian Institute of Science Education and Research on Thursday.

Ms Irani said that the centre would consider starting a Kendriya Vidyalaya at Vithura if a formal proposal comes from the state government.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy said the state government was ready for constructing better roads to the campus as demanded by the IISER officials.

However, this can be done only if land could be acquired for further developments with the cooperation of the local community.

Human Resource Development Ministry secretary, Mr Vinay Sheel Oberoi, said that the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Palakkad will have a permanent campus within weeks.

Mr.A. Sampath MP, Mr K.S. Sabarinathan MLA, Vithura Grama Panchayat president Krishnakumari, Dr. Tessy Thomas, chairperson, Board of Governors, IISER, and Prof. V. Ramakrishnan , Director IISER, Thiruvananthapuram, were present on the occasion.
