Tamil Nadu: Tree axed, 100 Little Cormorants killed
Chennai: Around 100 Little Cormorants, an Asian variety bird, were killed after the branch on which it was nesting was culled down by a home owner in Madipakkam, allegedly because the birds were ‘noisy’.
The incident happened on third cross street at Raja Rajeswari Nagar,
Dawn Williams of the Blue Cross of India told DC that they were able to rescue
87 Cormorants that were trapped between the fallen branches and fighting for its lives.
“The owner cut down a mango tree within his compound wall but it has resulted in the loss of lives of so many birds,” said Williams.
“It is the breeding season for these birds and they would have left after two or three weeks. The noise is not a reason, the birds had a right to live. It is nature. We will follow it up with the police,” Williams added.
